My week teaching week at Shimba Hills went much smoother than expected.  The biggest challenges for me were the heat without a lovely ocean breeze and the eastern “squatty potty” toilet.  My knees really rebelled with the squatting—I guess I have really stiffened up over the last 16 years.    I was reminded that during my years at Shimba, whenever I had to go into Mombasa I would ask myself “how can people live here—it’s so hot, and noisy and dirty” and was always so thankful to get back to my little room in Shimba .  Well,  I was very glad to get back to my home in Mombasa to my western toilet, electricity, fan and fridge.  The grace to live in the bush for more than a few days is gone.

Fridah is back from Senegal now and, last week I saw her when I went to the base.  You may not believe this but I have witnesses, Fridah and I sat and talked for several hours and Christine joined us for a while—actually I never even made it to the office that day.   The spirit of Karen is coming upon me 😊
