Today, I took both Erick and Fridah with me to pay the annual land rent and land rates; a job that I have been doing by myself since 2006. When Karen and I handed over the base leadership to Erick and Fridah in 2016, as part of the hand-over, I wrote a Base Operations Manual and, in the manual, I detailed each step of the lengthy rates/rent renewal process. However, as back up to that written instruction, I thought that having them accompany me this year, going to each office and being introduced to each official would help solidify the process in their minds so that they will be able, in the future, to do it without me.
Last year on furlough, Tevis took me shopping to Walmart and I bought some Ball pickling spice kits. It is hard to get good…or any pickles at all here in Mombasa so I thought that the kits would solve my problem. The big challenge now is finding the right kind of cucumbers. English cucumbers don’t hold up very well in the hot vinegar and the other kind available here have very tough skins.
Next furlough will get some seeds...but I am not sure if cucumbers would grow in this tropical climate.
