Christmas is less than a week away and I assume that Stateside friends are gearing up for some special time at church and probably at friends and extended family houses as well. I am wondering if they will get any snow in Seattle.
It is hot and humid here (today 86degrees with 70% humidity), which makes it harder for this Pacific Northwest gal to think “Christmas.” Although, this time of year the trade winds off the Indian Ocean come from the northeast and there is a strong breeze almost all day; which makes the climate at my house pleasant. In fact, the breeze is so strong that it blows my pictures off the living room walls so I have had to remove them until next month when the trade winds shift and start coming from the south east.
In these last few days before Christmas, I am trying to get in the appropriate holiday mood 😊. I did Christmas cards with cash gifts for all the base staff and my personal employees (Fred & Grace) and today I am sending out e-mail Christmas notes and my e-card. Yesterday, for the first time in 10 years I hung up the Nativity Wall Hanging that Mom made for me back in 1995 and I added the big silk Poinsettia bouquet that I bought last furlough at an estate sale in my brother Dan’s Bothell neighbourhood. I am feeling more inspired and Christmassy by the minute, and I am beginning to refocus on God’s incredible grace and mercy in sending the Saviour.
Last month I ended up with responsibility to produce a brochure for Mombasa base and a YWAM Kenya banner for the FOCUS Kenya conference being held 27Dec-2Jan at Kabarak University, just outside Nakuru. Baraza (Athi River) and Erick (Mombasa) will be going to man a booth and represent YWAM KENYA
Designing the brochure was really enjoyable...I like doing that sort of thing, and even though I am not very techy, I have a friend with a graphic design company 😊. However, it was stressful because I had trouble getting our base and ministry leaders to provide the information and photos needed for the brochure and there was a deadline to get things printed in time for the conference.
The banner was also a challenge because despite many phone calls, text messages and even e-mails, over a period of several weeks, no one could tell me the size of the booth our banner is supposed to wrap around. Finally, a contact in Nairobi gave me the measurements of the booths from the last conference—OK, use what you’ve got. Then just as I thought I had all of that sorted and had taken everything to Sword Graphics for tweaking and printing, Erick, at an impromptu staff meeting, casually informed all of us that he and his family were planning to drive upcountry—leaving a week earlier that I expected.
Well, I confess, instead of trusting that God already knew about Erick’s plans and had everything under control; I felt extremely stressed because Erick had to take the brochures and banner up country with him. Chris at Sword Graphics put a rush on things and since I had paid the full cost in advance, he was able to jump the printing queue (lots of companies getting 2018 calendars printed) and all of our things were done the night before Erick travelled. And all of that without even one piece of chocolate—another miracle of God’s grace!!
